Choosing a TPO or PVC roofing assembly

TPO and PVC are thermoplastic membrane options for commercial and low-slope roofs. Selecting between them requires more than comparing color or price. Double R Roofing evaluates roofing projects in Princeton and surrounding West Virginia communities with attention to drainage, deck condition, insulation, rooftop equipment, and building use. A written scope should identify the selected membrane, attachment method, insulation, seams, flashing, and edge details. Where exhaust or other chemical exposure is a concern, check the specific manufacturer’s compatibility guidance rather than assuming every product performs the same way. Light-colored membranes can reduce absorbed solar heat, but that does not establish a fixed energy saving for a particular building. Compare the complete roof assembly, installation requirements, and written warranty terms before choosing a system.

The first line of defense.

Your TPO or PVC membrane forms the exposed roofing surface. Overlaps are heat-welded, while compatible flashings address edges, curbs and penetrations.

The focus: seams, terminations and water management.

Performance below the surface.

Insulation and, where specified, cover board support the membrane assembly. Insulation thickness and tapered layouts are selected around the building's needs and drainage plan.

The focus: thermal performance and a suitable substrate.

It starts with a sound deck.

The deck supports the roof system. Its condition and attachment requirements need to be assessed before covering it with a new assembly.

The focus: a dependable foundation for the specified system.

Protection is
in the details.

A membrane is only part of a roofing system. The substrate, insulation, drainage and flashings all need to work together to protect the space below.

From the first roof assessment to the final walkthrough, your installation starts with a plan for your building.
  1. 01

    Seams that work together

Overlapping sheets are joined with hot air. Seam checks help identify areas that need attention before the job is complete.

  2. 02

    More than the surface

We assess the existing deck, insulation and drainage so the specified assembly addresses conditions beneath the membrane.

  3. 03

    Attention at every transition

Roof edges, drains, curbs and penetrations get compatible flashing details, where dependable water management matters most.

A clear plan.

Should I choose TPO or PVC?

That depends on the building, budget and roof exposure. TPO is worth considering for many general commercial applications. PVC may be a better fit where grease or specific chemical exposure is a concern. We review the conditions and manufacturer requirements with you.

Can you install over my existing roof?

Sometimes, but a recover is not right for every roof. Existing moisture, deck condition, the number of roof layers, local code and manufacturer requirements determine whether removal is needed.

Will a white roof lower my energy bills?

A reflective membrane can reduce solar heat absorption. Actual energy use depends on insulation, climate, building operation and the existing roof, so savings vary by building.

How long will installation take?

Roof size, access, preparation, weather and flashing details all affect the schedule. We discuss timing and coordination with your business as part of the project plan.
